One of the most frequent questions about exotic wood decking is: „How often do I need to oil it?” The answer often surprises people: it does not necessarily need oiling at all.
Where the myth comes from
We are used to the idea that outdoor wood must be protected, lacquered or painted, or it will decay. With pine or spruce, for instance, that is true. Exotic species such as ipe or cumaru behave differently.
Why exotic wood copes on its own
These species are very dense and naturally contain oils and substances that protect them from moisture, fungi and insects. That is why they sit in the highest durability class and can stay outdoors for years without any chemical treatment.
What happens if you don't oil it
Only the appearance changes. Under sun and rain, the warm reddish-brown colour gradually turns into an elegant silver-grey patina. It is a natural process, similar to the way copper oxidises. The wood's durability stays exactly the same.
Many architects and homeowners choose this patina deliberately, because it sits beautifully alongside stone, concrete and planting.

When oil makes sense
Oil is an aesthetic choice, not an obligation. If you want to keep the warm colour it has when new, an exterior oil applied periodically will preserve it. If you want the terrace to age gracefully with no maintenance, you can simply leave it as it is. A wash now and then is enough.
In short
You oil for colour, not for durability. And if you are still not sure what suits you, we can bring samples of new and weathered wood, so you can see the difference for yourself.
